Quarton Lake, located on the city’s west side, is fed by the Rouge River. The Quarton Lake Park surrounds the lake almost entirely and provides passive recreation areas for the public. In the fall of 2005, improvements to the park were completed. This restoration project included: dredging of sediment, removal of invasive species, shoreline stabilization, creation of a fish habitat, and an assessment of the tributary stream corridor. Restoration activities were coordinated with improvements to the adjacent park. Park improvements included the clean-up and beautification of the historic park, improvements to the water quality of the lake, and the extension of several pathways and parking areas to improve accessibility. Park improvements also included landscaping and structural enhancements creating several overlook viewing areas, installing a footbridge over the water just below the dam, addition of a new fishing pier, and an improved pathway system throughout the park.
Due to permitting issues, the annual dredging work planned at Quarton Lake was postponed. The contractor is now clearing their schedule, and preparing to arrive on Wednesday, September 20. Dredged materials will be removed from the bottom of the river extending from the Oak St. bridge to the upper end of the lake. Some materials may also be removed in the lake in the area south of the fishing dock. As in previous years, dredged materials will be pumped up to the storage area built on Oak St., just northwest of the Oak St. bridge. There, it will be stored in large plastic bags while it dries out. The dredging effort should take less than five work days. In October, after the materials have dried, the contractor will return to scoop the dredged materials from the storage area, and placing it into trucks for hauling to a landfill. That should be a two day effort.
QUARTON LAKE - ANNUAL MAINTENANCE DREDGING
The City has a five (5) year contract to conduct a relatively small dredging effort at Quarton Lake each year. This year, the focus will be on river between the Oak Street Bridge and Quarton Lake. Depending on the amount of sediment removed, this effort may extend into the northern portion of the lake. Starting the week of August 28th, a small boat will operate on the lake in this area removing sediment from the bottom. It will be pumped by a temporary pipe extending north to the sediment drying bed area used in previous years (north of Oak Street, and west of the river).
Although the main goal of this effort is to remove sediment from the lake (which improves water quality), it will also remove a lot of lily pads in the area.
The sediment will be stored in two (2) large bags in the drying area north of Oak Street. In about a month, the bags will be opened, and the dried material will be hauled off by truck. The loading effort should only take two (2) to three (3) days. After the material is removed, the area will be restored again with grass seed.

Quarton Lake Vegetation Management - July 24, 2017
Beginning the week of July 24, contractors hired by the City of Birmingham will perform necessary maintenance to woody overgrowth along the shoreline, beginning on the west side of the Lake. This work includes the removal of invasive trees shrubs and vines such as Buckthorn, Oriental Bittersweet, and Box elder among others, and also pruning of desirable trees and shrubs. Additionally, smaller invasive plants and weeds such as Canada thistle, Invasive Cattails, and Phragmites on the east side of the Lake will be treated as well. The City of Birmingham was issued a permit by the Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) for performing aquatic nuisance plant control at Quarton Lake using the following approved aquatic herbicides - Tribune (diquat DiBromide) and Clipper (Flumioxazin). Tri-County Aquatics, Inc. will be performing a treatment on Tuesday, June 27, contingent upon the weather. Postcards are being mailed to lake-area residents and notices will be posted at and around the lake near the treatment areas before the work begins. A 24 hour water use restriction (swimming, drinking, fishing, etc.) is recommended after the lake is treated. A 48 hour restriction for irrigation of lawns will be in effect for 48 hours after the treatment. Please note annual dredging work to occur mid-July. Quarton Lake Update - September 16, 2016
There will be no fall treatment necessary this season. The lake is in much better condition due to the regular treatments. The weeds, lily pads and other forms of vegetation will always find a way to grow back. But, by keeping up on the treatments on an annual or bi-annual basis, we can stay ahead of them and do it for a reduced cost using less product and treating less of an area. Over the past decade, the City has installed native plants and flowers along Quarton Lake to provide natural beauty, prevent streambank erosion, and deter water fowl.
Native plants, by definition, are plants that existed in the Great Lakes region prior to the arrival of European settlers. They contribute to the rich and productive relationships among plants, animals, insects and microorganisms in natural ecosystems such as woodlands, prairies, and wetlands.
Native trees and shrubs contribute to the natural environment in important ways: • Erosion control: Native plants have extensive root systems that help control bank erosion.
• Nutrient filtration: These extensive root systems help filter phosphorus, nitrogen, and other pollutants.
• Natural vigor: When properly planted, they adapt well to the variable weather conditions of Southeast Michigan.
• Resistance to pests and diseases: Once established, natives are often resistant to pests and diseases, reducing the need for pesticides.
• Habitat for birds, insects, and other beneficial wildlife: Native plant communities provide food, shelter and hiding places for birds, butterflies, insects and other beneficial wildlife.
We are working with our engineering and landscape architect consultants to properly manage these native plants and flowers. Over the upcoming several months, we will be removing upland dead trees and invasive shrubs throughout the park, to help improve visibility to the lake, biodiversity, and aesthetics. We are working on a multi-year vegetation management program, to install additional native plantings and trees, and provide weed control.

How Can You Help?
We can all play a part on the water quality of the Rouge River and Quarton Lake. Storm sewer runoff from adjacent streets, parking lots, and driveways flows directly to the lake – untreated. Therefore, we need to pay close attention to the amount of sediment, yard waste, and chemicals from vehicles that enter into these storm drains.
Sweep it. Do you have extra fertilizer, grass clippings, or dirt on your driveway? Sweep it back onto your lawn. Hosing your driveway sends these pollutants into storm drains that lead to our lakes and streams.
Keep it clean. Whether in the street or in your yard, remember to keep leaves, grass clippings, trash, and fertilizers out of storm drains.
Only rain in the drain. Never dump motor oil, chemicals, pet waste, dirty or soapy water, or anything else down the storm drain. All of these materials pollute our lakes and streams.
Leave a buffer. If you live along the lake or river, maintain a 15’ no-mow, chemical-free vegetative buffer along the waterway. This will prevent excess fertilizers, herbicides, and other pollutants from entering the waterway, thus creating potential nuisance vegetation to grow. We recommend installing flowers and plants that are native to Michigan, which have in-depth root systems to filter nutrients and require less maintenance. Do not place yard wastes, fertilizers, or composting sites near the water.
Hire an earth-friendly contractor. If you hire a lawncare contractor, consider utilizing a provider registered in the Michigan Green Industry Association (MGIA) ‘Healthy Lawn Care Program for Watershed Protection’. There are several lawncare providers in the local area that provide no-mow buffers, earth-friendly fertilizers, and soil testing.
