Adopt A Senior Program

The Adopt A Senior Program was formed in 1996 when Birmingham Police Officers saw a need to assist local senior citizens by providing companionship and assistance when needed.

Many seniors have no nearby relatives to call on and with this program, Birmingham Officers offer assistance by performing small household chores or errands during their breaks or after their shift ends. This relationship will often lead to the senior using the officer as a resource to connect them with various programs geared towards their situation.

The Adopt A Senior Program also works closely with Next (formerly the Birmingham Area Seniors Coordinating Council and Center (BASCC)). They participate periodically in "Ask the Officer” sessions at the senior center. At the sessions seniors have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with an officer to answer any questions or concerns he or she may have. The Adopt A Senior Program also participates in the annual fair at the Next Center, located at 2121 Midvale Street in Birmingham.

Keep an eye out for seniors in your neighborhood that may benefit from the Adopt A Senior Program. Too often seniors must live their remaining years with nowhere to turn for assistance with their needs.
