Traffic Safety

Traffic safety remains one of the top priorities of the Birmingham Police Department.  In addition to regular patrol duties, officers respond to specific complaints and patrol high accident intersections.  This selective enforcement may be directed at speed violations, turn violations, and school zone enforcement.

A representative from the Birmingham Police Department sits on the City’s Multi-Modal Advisory Steering Committee to address engineering, traffic flow, and speed issues, as well as pedestrian and bicycle concerns.

Our department uses a speed monitoring radar trailer and five speed boards as public educational and warning devices to caution motorists who exceed the speed limit.  The radar trailer is moved throughout the city, and is used primarily in residential neighborhoods to address specific areas of concern.  Speed boards are permanently mounted radar units with large speed display and also feature a flashing light that is activated to alert speeding motorists.  Speedboards are used in heavily trafficked non-residential areas, and assist in voluntary compliance with speed regulations.

The Birmingham Police Department has installed "KEEP KIDS ALIVE DRIVE 25" advisory signs in all school zone and park areas.
