SOCRRA Open by Appointment Only

The SOCRRA Drop-Off Center at 995 Coolidge is now open to the public (resident communities only) by appointment only. The center has been closed to the public since March 17th due to safety concerns surrounding COVID-19 and ongoing congestion at the site from trash haulers. As a regional facility responsible for the collection of trash and recycling in multiple communities, SOCRRA appreciates your patience as they work to safely serve the community by appointment. For more information on appointments, please review this message from SOCRRA.

To make an appointment, visit SOCRRA’s website at www.socrra.org

Plastic Bags

Plastic bags cannot be placed in recycle bins at the curb, and cannot be dropped off at the Recycling Center at this time.

Offsite Drop-off - Plastic bags and film

Plastic bags and film may be recycled at area retail and grocery store locations such as Kroger, Meijer, Walmart, Target and Kohl's and do not require use of SOCRRA's site for recycling. Please visit www.how2recycle.info. Using their recycling locator, you can enter your zip code to find retail locations near you. Acceptable items: plastic grocery bags, zip top bags, air pillows, dry cleaning bags, wrap that comes around napkins, paper towel, bathroom tissue, bread bags, produce bags, and newspaper bags. The manufacturers of these materials understand that these materials cannot be recycled curbside, and have provided for 18,000 drop-offs nationwide to collect for recycling. Follow their lead and do not place these items in your recycling cart and use the provided drop-off locations. Learn more at www.socrra.org.

Alternative Recycling Info

Do you have items like electronics and scrap metal that need to be recycled, paper that needs to be shredded, or hazardous waste that needs to be discarded? Although SOCRRA remains closed for supplemental recycling, starting on June 1 residents will have three sites to choose from to meet their recycling needs free of charge.

  • GFL Recycling - 414 E. Hudson, Royal Oak
  • eCycle Opportunities - 29699 Southfield Road, Southfield – part of the JVS building
  • ERG Environmental Services - 13040 Merriman Road, Livonia

For more information regarding the materials each site collects, their hours and phone numbers please see this flyer

Introducing SOCRRA's New Waste Wizard

A brand new feature called Waste Wizard, an application on the SOCRRA website, provides instructions on how to handle every type of material. Simply type the name of a waste item and it will tell you how to recycle or dispose of it. Access the Waste Wizard at https://www.socrra.org/.
unnamedMixed Recycling

All SOCRRA communities participate in the mixed recycling program. Visit SOCRRA's website for more information. If you don't have a green cart, contact SOCRRA at 248-288-5150, to have a cart delivered.

Please note:  Household batteries (AA, AAA, D, C and 9 volt) will now need to be taken to the SOCRRA facility.  Please do not put them in your recycling cart.

Visit https://www.socrrarecycling.org/ for additional information.

Recycling is collected on the same day your trash is collected. Be sure to set out by 7:00 a.m. on the day of collection, and keep several feet between recyclables and other items out for collection such as trash and yard waste.

Dual Refuse, Recycling & Compost Trucks.  Car Trucking (the City's refuse hauler) has purchased several dual purpose trucks. These trucks have two separate sides which allow them to take either trash, recyclables or compost.

Frequently asked questions

What is "Mixed Recycling"?
Mixed recycling is when all recyclables can be mixed together in both the recycling container and recycling truck. The sorting of materials is done at the MRF, rather than by the recycling drivers.
Why the big green carts for recycling collection?
Proven benefits of switching to carts include more recyclables collected, increased convenience for residents to fit all their recyclables into one container, increased safety for workers, and potential cost savings. More materials diverted for recycling will increase revenue sharing for member communities thereby reducing disposal costs.
