Birmingham In Stitches Event Overview

The Birmingham Public Arts Board's Birmingham In Stitches event is a community-based public art installation event that promotes existing public art programs, such as the Art in Public Spaces program, and engages the broader community in public art.  This project is based around the concept of “yarn bombing”, which involves placing knitted or crocheted objects onto trees, parking meter posts, light posts, bicycle racks, and benches. During previous events, the yarn installations have been in the following locations: Shain Park, the plaza at Townsend and Pierce, Merrill Street between Old Woodward and Pierce, the Birmingham Historical Museum and St. James Church. Three events have occurred (September 2012, September 2015 and Winter Markt 2015).

Birmingham In Stitches 2017

A Birmingham In Stitches event is planned for September 16 through October 8, 2017. Volunteers are needed to help with knitting and crocheting the displays, installation & de-installation of displays, and other aspects of the project.  Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome and encouraged, as are groups.  For more information or to volunteer to participate in the event, contact Anne Ritchie at (248) 635-1765) or anneritchie7@yahoo.com. Interested participants must indicate which locations they want to decorate in their response. A map showing approved locations for the 2017 event is below. Thank you for your support!
