Water System Security
In early February, 2021, a municipal water system in Florida announced an online hacker unsuccessfully attempted to take control of the water treatment system and alter the amount of a chemical that was added to the water during treatment. The City of Birmingham’s water suppliers, Southeastern Oakland County Water Authority (SOCWA) and Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA), have issued statements that can be found at bit.ly/bhamwater. Both SOCWA and GLWA recently completed the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Risk and Resilience Assessment and Emergency Response Plan. The City is confident its water partners are meeting safety protocols.
