Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to have someone inspect my home for fire hazards?

Yes. The Fire Prevention Bureau does home inspections free of charge when requested. This will be done by a Firefighter who will give you a list of things he feels you should do. To make your home safer, call 248.530.1923 and ask for Firefighter/Paramedic Jessica Rak.

What is our local emergency contact information?
To report a life threatening situation or crime in progress, call 9-1-1. All 9-1-1 calls for police, fire and emergency medical service dialed within the City of Birmingham are answered by dispatchers in the Communications Center, which is located in the Police Department. To report any other emergency situation which is not life threatening, contact the Birmingham Police Department at 248.530.1889.
When I call for an ambulance, why does the fire department respond?

The Birmingham Fire Department is the licensed provider of advanced life support in Birmingham. These are firefighters that have been trained in the latest procedures for emergency care. Also, the Fire Department has a quick response time and stabilizes the patient before transporting them to the hospital.

Why do you respond with an ambulance and a big fire truck also?

The fire engine responds along with the EMS truck to offer assistance. The personnel on the engine are all first responders, and some are basic and advanced medics.

If I use my washing machine while they are flowing hydrants, the rusty water stains my clothes. What can I do to clean them?

There are several products out on the market to add to your wash water that will work. They contain oxalic acid and go under several trade names such as "Iron Out". They are available at hardware stores and grocery stores.

Why do the firefighters paint the hydrant caps different colors?

The different colors tell the firefighters how much water is available through that hydrant.

How many fire hydrants are there in Birmingham?
There are 865 fire hydrants located throughout the City.
Does the Fire Department have a medical equipment loan program, such as wheelchairs, crutches, etc?
No. If you are in need of these types of supplies we suggest looking under "medical supplies" in the yellow pages.
Does the Fire Department assist in animal rescues?
No. If the animal is on city property or appears to be sick, the Birmingham Police will respond. Animal situations located on private property will be referred to a private company. You can call the police dispatch non-emergency number at 248.530.1889 for assistance.
