Planning is responsible for assisting citizens and developers with all aspects of their development needs. This includes reviewing all plans submitted regarding the development of all property located within the City of Birmingham, assisting with the application process for rezoning, site plans, subdivision plats, lot splits, historic preservation, SLUP's, and temporary and permanent signage.

Planning is responsible for administering and maintaining the Birmingham Zoning Code, 2016 Plan, Master Plan, and the Official Zoning Map, as well as coordinating special projects and disseminating information to the public regarding these projects.

The Planning Department is located in the Community Development Department, which is located in room #223 on the second floor of the City Hall Building at 151 Martin Street, Birmingham, MI 48009.
