The Birmingham Police Department assigns a sergeant in the Investigative Division to the position of School Liaison Officer. The sergeant in this position is responsible for:
- Traffic Safety - Prepares and presents programs on bicycle and pedestrian safety, seat belt laws, and school safety to classrooms and assemblies.
Counseling - Confers with troubled students, conducts family conferences on issues of police concern, meets with students, teachers, parents, and community groups regarding prevention strategies.- Education - Speaks to school groups on issues related to juvenile crimes. Conducts presentations on personal safety, and stranger awareness. Speaks to students about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Facilitates communications between schools, community groups, and the police department.
- Investigations - Conducts criminal investigations of juvenile related crimes and incidents occurring on school grounds. Coordinates with various social agencies in the area to further juvenile empowerment. Investigates child neglect and abuse cases. Provides security for athletic events.
- Community Organizations - Maintains relationships with Birmingham Community Coalition, Birmingham-Bloomfield Youth Assistance, Birmingham-Bloomfield Families in Action, HAVEN, Common Ground, and Safety Town.

Police Auxiliary
The Auxiliary Police Unit is comprised of dedicated volunteers. Auxiliary officers receive 120 hours of instruction at the Oakland Police Academy Reserve Officer Training Program prior to appointment.
Auxiliary Police Officers assist regular Officers during many special events held throughout the year and act as back up to the regular Officers on patrol. Members of the Auxiliary Police are perhaps most visible in providing crowd and traffic control and security for high school sporting events.
