City of Birmingham Building Department COVID-19 Reponse - Application Process

The Building Department is responsible for the implementation and enforcement of City and State codes as they relate to the construction, remodeling, alteration, repair and demolition of buildings and structures located within the City of Birmingham.
The purpose of such codes is to provide minimum standards to safeguard public safety, property and welfare by regulating and controlling the numerous factors involved with development. To ensure that construction work complies with applicable codes, the City requires comprehensive plans for most types of projects and inspections are conducted at periodic stages of the work.
The Building Department staff strives to provide quick and accurate construction project plan review and permit issuance services, and we will do everything possible to assist you in processing your application.   Although the staff does not provide design services, the City provides technical handouts and will interpret codes to assist you in obtaining approval and permits for your project.
