SGT. McCANHAM, SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER

Meet School Resource Officer Kyle McCanham. Sgt McCanham is assigned to a full time position at Ernest W. Seaholm High School, but will also be assisting at Quarton Elementary School, Pierce Elementary School and Derby Middle School.

Kyle received his Bachelor's Degree from Central Michigan University and graduated Summa Cum Laude in the honors program with an Academic Excellence Award He attended the Oakland Police Academy and was hired by the Birmingham Police Department in 2018.

During his five years with our Police Department, Kyle has proven to be a valuable member of our agency and was currently assigned to the Narcotic Enforcement Team (NET) for the last year and a half. Follow this link to learn more about Kyle.

FIRE HYDRANT FLOW TESTING

On Monday, October 9, 2023, the Birmingham Fire Department and the Department of Public Services will conduct the annual flow testing of the City’s hydrants between 11 p m - 6 a m In the event of inclement weather, testing will begin Tuesday, October 10 at 11 p m

Flow testing provides the flow pressure and volume of water that is expected from each hydrant. Additionally, it reveals hydrants with mechanical problems. Flow testing is one of the ways the City ensures hydrants are operable and provide the proper water flow when needed.

Please note flow testing may cause water to appear rust colored. This condition does not pose a health problem. Normal running of COLD water will soon clear the water. Please run the cold water for at least five minutes after it runs clear.

BIRMINGHAM GREEN

As you may have heard, the City of Birmingham has embarked on the creation of a Sustainability and Climate Action Plan (SCAP) to help position itself for a changing future, protect the natural environment, and reduce extreme weather impacts on the community. What is also important to acknowledge is that the environment has no boundaries, and that issues like storm water runoff and pollution from other communities can very much affect Birmingham, and vice versa. To that end, the City is proud to announce the appointment of a Birmingham staff member, Planning Director Nick Dupuis, to the Healthy Climate Task Force.

This appointment to the Healthy Climate Task Force, led by Sheila Tomkowiak (Grosse Pointe) and Coleman A. Young II (Detroit), will put the City of Birmingham in a prime position to shape the Healthy Climate Plan for Southeast Michigan, which will ultimately connect with and uplift existing local, regional, State of Michigan, and federal climate plans. It will also position Southeast Michigan communities like Birmingham to become more competitive for $4.6 billion in federal climate implementation funding, to become available starting next year.

LEAF COLLECTION BEGINS THIS MONTH

CURBED STREETS

On streets with curbs ONLY, curbside leaf collection begins Monday, October 9, 2023. The schedule shown below provides for collections in each zone of the community. To minimize safety concerns, leaves should be raked into the street immediately next to the curb no sooner than the weekend prior to your collection period. Be sure leaf piles do not obstruct traffic, and do not rake leaves into the street after your final collection date.

UNCURBED STREETS

Those living on uncurbed streets must place leaves in the following approved containers by 7 a.m. on your regular refuse collection day:

Brown paper yard waste bags, 30 gallon size, found at most hardware stores.

Rigid 35 gallon containers that contain Birmingham's yard waste decal. Decals can be obtained at the Department of Public Services, 851 S. Eton Road or the Clerk's office, located at City Hall, 151 Martin Street.

Place approved containers curbside by 7 a.m. on your trash day. Yard waste is collected each year until the third Friday in December

ABSENTEE BALLOTS NOW AVAILABLE

Birmingham voters who requested an absentee ballot by mail should receive those ballots by mail soon The clerk‘s office worked diligently to prepare the initial mailing of absent voter ballots, and deposited nearly 4,000 absentee ballots with the post office on September 28 Voters can apply for and track their ballot on mi.gov/vote. Contact the clerk’s office at (248) 530-1880 if you have questions or concerns regarding the delivery of your absentee ballot.

Voters may also pick up an absentee ballot in person at the clerk’s office now through Monday, November 6 at 4:00 p.m. Please bring your ID to obtain your ballot. If a person is dropping off an application for a voter who is not physically present, the absentee ballot will have to be delivered by mail through the USPS

NEW: EARLY IN-PERSON VOTING OCTOBER 28 - NOVEMBER 5

Early in-person voting will occur in Birmingham this fall for the first time ever ahead of the November 7 local election. From October 28 through November 5, 2023, Birmingham voters can visit an assigned early voting site to cast a ballot in person, just like at a polling place on Election Day.

Birmingham voters can choose from two early voting locations:

The Bloomfield Township Library, 1099 Lone Pine Rd., Bloomfield Township, 48302 Waterford Oaks Activity Center, 2800 Watkins Lake Road, Waterford, 48328

The polls will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day October 28 through November 5 except Thursdays, when the hours are 12 p m to 8 p m

Some important things to remember:

Early voting sites, just like polling places on Election Day, cannot register voters or update your voter registration address. Please visit the clerk’s office or, before October 23, take care of it online, by mail or at a Secretary of State office.

You’ll need to bring a valid Michigan driver’s license or state ID that shows your current Birmingham address, or be prepared to show proof of residency Check your voter registration here

If you received an absentee ballot for this election and then decide to vote in person, either early or on Election Day, please bring the absentee ballot to surrender when you come to vote

ELECTION WORKERS NEEDED!

Curious about elections? Consider working as a paid City of Birmingham election inspector for the November 7 election!

Election inspectors are hired, paid and trained local government workers that assist with running local elections. With the introduction of early in-person voting this year and three elections scheduled in 2024, Birmingham needs more poll workers than ever before It’s a great way to build a deeper understanding of the voting process and the measures in place to ensure that elections remain fair, transparent and secure.

How it works:

On Election Day, election inspectors work from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. in locations throughout Birmingham. During early in-person voting October 28 through Nov. 5, election inspectors will work whole or half days at the Bloomfield Township library or Oakland County’s Waterford Oaks Activity Center They are paid an hourly wage, and attend paid training sessions before the election. At all sites, election inspectors greet and check in voters, issue ballots and assist with tabulation. Individuals may also be hired to assist with processing absentee ballots

Who’s eligible:

·You must be at least 16 years of age

·You must be a registered voter in Michigan if 18+ years of age. Individuals aged 16 – 17 must be a Michigan resident. Check your voter registration here: https://mvic.sos.state.mi.us/Voter/Index

You must not have a felony or election crime conviction

WATER TREATMENT NOTICE

The City of Birmingham mailed a notice to all Birmingham residents on Thursday, September 21, 2023 as required by State law, advising one of ten water samples collected in June of 2023 resulted in an orthophosphate level slightly below the required Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) Water Quality Parameters (WQP). The City and Southeastern Oakland County Water Authority (SOCWA) believe the non-compliant sample produced a false low WQP due to it being inadvertently collected from a utility sink that was no longer in use and had been sitting stagnant awaiting demolition. Standing water should not be used for water sampling. A subsequent sample collected at the same site from an active sink in July of 2023 was found to meet all EGLE requirements.

“We consider the health, safety and welfare of our residents and water consumers in the City of Birmingham to be of paramount importance,” said Birmingham City Manager Jana Ecker. “It is important for residents to know this is a potential treatment issue, and the sample in question and all water delivered to residents is safe to consume.”

SOCWA provides routine water testing, including WQP monitoring, as a service to Birmingham and other member communities. For WQP monitoring in Birmingham, SOCWA tests water samples from 10 locations every quarter One of the 10 locations used for WQP monitoring is the Whole Foods store located at 2100 East Maple Road. Unbeknownst to SOCWA, Whole Foods reconfigured their store and had discontinued use of the food court area. When SOCWA collected the June 2023 WQP monitoring sample, they collected water from a sink in the former food court area, which had been sitting stagnant for an extended period of time awaiting demolition.

“The sample at issue from the Whole Foods food court sink should be disregarded because that source was not in active service and the results are not representative of the site,” said SOCWA General Manager Jeffrey McKeen

Orthophosphate is added to water to prevent pipe corrosion. All tests show no indication of pipe corrosion. Residents do not need to boil water or take other corrective actions. All water being delivered to Birmingham residents and tenants is in compliance with the Safe Water Drinking Act The City will increase water sampling over the next year per EGLE requirements.

REMINDERS FOR PET OWNERS

If your dog or cat is four months or older, they need to be licensed in the City of Birmingham. It's a simple process that ensures the well-being of your pets and the community. You can get a license at the City Clerk's Office during regular business hours, online or send in your application by mail. If submitting by mail, don't forget to include the pet license registration form, rabies immunization record and payment

The license fees are the same for new registrations and renewals: $15.00 for a 1-year tag, $20.00 for a 2-year tag, and $25.00 for a 3-year tag. When it's time for renewal, make sure your pet gets their rabies shot and renew through the City Clerk’s office.

ORDINANCE REMINDERS:

All dogs must be on a chain or leash and under reasonable control of some person at all times.

Owners cannot allow animals to deposit fecal matter in any place other than the premises where the animal is harbored or kept, unless it is immediately collected and removed

No person shall harbor or keep any dog which, by loud or frequent or habitual barking, yelping or howling, causes a serious annoyance to the neighborhood, or to people passing on the street.

Please remember dog waste should be collected with a bag and disposed of in your garbage container, not your yard waste bin.

DURING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH, LEARN ABOUT BIRMINGHAM’S FAMOUS MURALIST, CARLOS LOPEZ

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12 AT 7 PM, VIRTUAL ONLY

Join us for the Birmingham Museum’s virtual monthly lecture to learn about Carlos Lopez. Born in Cuba and raised during his early years in Spain, Lopez was one of the best known muralists of his time, following in the tradition of the likes of Diego Rivera, and designed a controversial mural for the Birmingham Post Office in 1942 that still exists today. But there is much more to Lopez, who was influenced by the ancient cave paintings he played in as a child in the Spanish region of Altamira, becoming highly regarded for his painting technique and emotionally sensitive portrayal of people and animals. Together with his wife Rhoda LeBlanc, the artist pair courted and worked in Birmingham and collaborated professionally throughout the area, leaving their mark on Southeast Michigan. Join the Birmingham Museum’s Donna Casaceli virtually at 7 PM on Thursday, October 12 for a closer look at Lopez’ life and legacy, “Carlos Lopez: The Painter Behind the Controversy.” This event is sponsored by the Baldwin Public Library Register on the library’s website for this free, virtual program.

Stephanie Pizzo joined the Eisenhower Dance Company (EDD) as a founding member in 1991. At various points in her dance career she served as Resident Choreographer, Associate Artistic Director, and Co-Artistic Director. Ms. Pizzo now leads the company into her 7th season as Artistic Director She focuses on collaborating with the highest quality national and international artists and creating strong ties within the metro Detroit community through the art of dance, using the art of contemporary dance both as a means to present beautiful, athletic, and engaging repertory but also as a vehicle to reflect on and explore issues of social significance

Birmingham resident Kegham Tazian will receive a Special Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring both his tremendous body of artwork, and his impact on thousands of art students during his 47-year tenure as Professor of Fine Arts at Oakland Community College As educator and artist, he has continually pushed the conventional boundaries of creative expression. His sculpture, Pyramid Earth, is installed in Linden Park.

Tazian’s sculptures and paintings are globally renowned, and his works can be found in public and private collections worldwide, including various corporations, municipalities, churches, embassies, and museums.

The Community House, which is celebrating its centennial in Birmingham this year will receive the Partners with the Arts Award recognizing ‘100 years of service’ supporting the arts, and their role helping to make the Birmingham-Bloomfield area a unique cultural hub. The award is given directly by the Cultural Council to honor a business, non-profit or organization in our community that supports the arts in a distinguished manner

A nine-hole round of golf at Lincoln Hills and Springdale golf courses costs less with reduced fall rates now in effect. Both municipal courses are now open to everyone – no membership required

TURKEY SHOOT CHARITY CLASSIC EVENT

Hit the links for a good cause at this annual event benefitting Lighthouse. This year’s Turkey Shoot Charity Classic will take place on Saturday, November 4 at Springdale Golf Course

The entry fee is $35 per person, but golfers will receive a $10 discount if they donate a frozen turkey and $5 off for a non-perishable food item. Teams consist of two players and the format is a backwards scramble.
